Paul Krugman, Nobelprijswinnaar economie en columnist van The New York Times, schrijft in zijn blog 'The Conscience of a Liberal' d.d. 1 april 2013, over de 3-procentsnorm die in Nederland wordt gehanteerd als het gaat om de tekorten van de overheid. Krugman verwijst in zijn blog naar een artikel uit de Financial Times met onder andere de opinie van Bas Jacobs, hoogleraar openbare financiën en economisch beleid aan Erasmus School of Economics.
'Prominent austerity sceptics at universities and big banks say they have been shut out, not just from government policy-making bodies but from the counsels of political parties on both right and left,' zo schrijft Krugman. Hij vervolgt met een quote van 'austerity-sceptic' Jacobs: 'It’s not only the current government, basically all the sensible political parties have embraced austerity.'
