Veertigjarig bestaan Geschiedenis-afdeling

Established in 1978, our department emphasized a social scientific approach to history, called "History of Society" / "Maatschappijgeschiedenis". Although the name of our teaching and research programmes has changed into "History", like other history departments in the Netherlands, our department continues to have a unique character. Generally, our research and teaching programmes aim to improve the understanding of current developments within societies around the globe by analysing both long-term processes and the specific experiences of people in the past.

The focus on such contemporary themes also characterised this festive conference. Prominent scholars discussed a topical theme of tremendous global consequences: they reflected on the possible drivers of the current rise of nationalism and protectionism in a globalising world.
