Current project
Football Supporters and Antisemitism in the 21st Century
Antisemitism has become common at football games in the Netherlands, with supporters from different clubs using antisemitic language and symbols against their rivals. The research project involves educational programmes initiated to prevent discrimination and antisemitism in football stadiums in the Netherlands. In this project we collaborate with major stakeholders in the field, including the Fancoach project of Feyenoord and the Anne Frank House. It is Feyenoord’s explicit ambition to eliminate anti-Semitic hate speech from their stadium. In order to do so Feyenoord invites penalised supporters to develop knowledge and understanding of the Holocaust through an educational programme. The project researches Feyenoord’s educational programme; it’s opportunities and limitations. The project looks at which histories are told and the intended and unintended short- and long-term effects of the educational programme.
Societal outreach
Changing the Chants
The European Project ‘Changing the Chants’ is a co-operation between the Anne Frank House, Borussia Dortmund, Fare Network and Feyenoord Rotterdam. The project aims to find educational methods to counter anti-Semitic chants during football matches in Europe. The project began in June 2019 and is funded by the European Commission. It will run for 24 months until June 2021. Jasmin Seijbel is involved in the project as external contributor to observe pilot methods, review them and develop guidelines. Together with seven other external contributors she observes, researches, reviews and jointly extract successful methods and write guidelines to counter anti-Semitic chants during football matches in Europe.
