I am Louise Smink and I recently joined Impact at the Core as a Junior Researcher. I am a political scientist, especially interested in policy-making and political processes. In my spare time I like spending time with friends, going to the theater, cooking, and baking. Further, I love arts and craft, currently I enjoy creating modern embroidery work (needle painting) and transforming and reupholstering furniture.
What attracted you to Impact at the Core? What made you want to work as a researcher in the Impact at the Core program?
I was attracted to the work of Impact at the Core since education is used to create a positive societal impact. Because of my background in political science, I have always been keen to understand how scientific knowledge can be utilized to improve legislation and provide solutions for societal problems. So, in this position I can combine those interests.
What is your favourite part of doing research? What research activities do you enjoy most and why?
For me, the essence of research lies in explaining what happened or why a particular outcome occurred. The results can provide essential input to develop policy or improve courses. I particularly enjoy familiarizing myself with a phenomenon and to study it from different angles to be able to provide a meaningful explanation.
In what way do you hope to contribute to impact-driven education?
I would be incredibly pleased if the learning developers of Impact at the Core can implement the research outcomes to improve impact-driven education. I believe that impact-driven education enables students to broaden their horizon and to be prepared for their future careers. Many societal problems are wicked by nature and only when people with diverse backgrounds collaborate, solutions can be found.
What gives you good energy?
I can get excited working in a creative environment, gaining new insights and be inspired by other people!
