What

A conversation piece is an object that serves as the basis for a conversation on a specific topic.

Why

Objects are carriers of meaning and of stories. Discussing a topic on the basis of an object makes it clear what participants find truly important.

How

1. Decide on the topic for the conversation with the participants.
2. Ask the participants to bring an object that is representative of this topic. You can also choose several topics and ask the participants to bring various objects. Do try to limit the number. If you wish, you can also take an object to the conversation yourself.
3. Ask about the object the participants brought with them. What significance does it carry for them? What is the story behind it? What characteristics of the object are connected with the topic? Why?
4. Describe what you yourself see in the object.
5. Optionally, discuss your own object.
