Coalition Building

Coalition building

What

Coalition building is the creation of an overview of what is needed to organise a network of relevant actors around a solution.

Why

Many solutions to complex issues require cooperation between people and organisations. Coalition building helps you work out what an effective partnership for the benefit of the solution looks like.

How

  1. Inventory the roles needed to achieve the solution.
  2. Define important qualities required to fulfil each role. Think of competences, capacities, a network, authorisations, power and so on.
  3. Draw up a profile for each role. What does the ideal candidate for this role look like?
  4. For each role, identify one or more actors that could fulfil it.
  5. For each role, evaluate which actor fits the profile best.
  6. Evaluate the coalition of most suitable actors. Do the actors complement each other? Are the actors able to cooperate successfully? If not, which actor qualifies? Put the coalition together.
