The Dutch Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) has awarded a PhD in the Humanities grant to Mariana Fried. With this grant Mariana Fried will start a research project at Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication on how digital city workers can reshape the Silicon Valley bandwagon. Her PhD research will be supervised by prof.dr. Susanne Janssen, and VCC theme leads: dr. Isabel Awad, and dr. Jiska Engelbert.
Sociologist dr. Jonathan Mijs of the Erasmus University Rotterdam has been awarded 250.000 euro in funding from a Veni grant through the NWO (Dutch Research Council) for his project on the social origins and pliability of popular beliefs about inequality.
Dr. Amanda Alencar was awarded the Stichting Erasmus Trustfonds for her research project "Refugee settlement, place-making and digital technologies in the cities of Rotterdam and Amsterdam". She will develop this project in connection with the Vital Cities and Citizens Erasmus Initiative.

Dr. Maria Schiller and prof. dr. Peter Scholten of the Erasmus University Rotterdam participate in a newly awarded Horizon Europe 2020 project on the integration of post-2014 migrants in small- and medium-sized towns and rural areas: WHOLE-COMM. The project will start on April 1st, 2021 and will last for 36 months. The overarching goal is to trigger innovation and to build more cohesive and more resilient communities.
A multidisciplinary research team, including professor Jurian Edelenbos of the Erasmus School of Social and Behavioural Sciences has been awarded a ZonMw COVID-19 research grant (500.000 euros) in the track of Societal Dynamics for the project The Resilient Delta. Prof. dr. Frank van Oort from ESE is the main applicant of this grant and project leader.
The Erasmus Research Centre for Media, Communication and Culture (ERMeCC) as coordinator, together with eight other consortium partners across Europe, received an H2020 grant of 3 million euro for the major international research project INVENT: European Inventory of Societal Values of Culture as Basis for Inclusive Cultural Policies. The project is led by prof. dr. Susanne Janssen and Dr. Marc Verboord.
With the Green Deal, a broad coalition aims to map out the possibilities of aquathermy, also known as the thermal energy produced from water. This partnership has resulted in new projects for researchers and those affiliated with the VCC. Jitske van Popering-Verkerk leads this project through GovernEUR, an ESSB initiative. Prof. Jurian Edelenbos, the scientific director of VCC, has been included as a governance expert within the research team.
Together with Nederlands Jeugdinstituut (NJi), dr. Brian Godor, Assistant Professor at the Erasmus University, will be investigating the societal impact of football and how it can make youth more resilient. For his FAIRPLAY project, Godor received an Erasmus+ grant earlier this year.
How do citizens respond to urban development plans and the construction of new real estate? In which ways can people regulate these emotions? These questions are key to the research conducted by dr. Jasper Eshuis of the Erasmus School of Social and Behavioural Sciences. It is an interdisciplinary research that he will conduct in collaboration with psychology. He won a Timeless Grant of the Erasmus Trustfonds and started his overseas research adventure around October 2019.
The NOW-vidi’s from the 2018 round have been awarded to six talented researcher at Erasmus University. One of the laureates is ESHCC’s dr. Amanda Brandellero. Taking a European comparative approach, this project uncovers how the values and practices of making and crafting locally (e.g. symbolic, societal, economic) can be harnessed by cities to support their transition to more circular forms of production and consumption.
