Discussion with the researchers on the primary trends and challenges shaping the city’s economy
The critical role of spatial management in driving the Dutch economy has received significant attention in recent media discussions. Whether consulting the Dutch Central Bank, researchers, or the State Advisor, the consensus is clear: we must make prudent use of our limited physical and environmental resources. As demands for housing continue to rise, the pressure on available space intensifies. At the same time, new residents are actively seeking employment opportunities and amenities. This session aims to explore the spatial strategies and difficult decisions required to maintain a robust economy and meet the needs of the city's residents effectively.
The changes taking place in the Rotterdam labor market, as highlighted in the Economic Outlook, deeply impact individuals in vulnerable positions or facing uncertain employment situations. This workshop will delve into their perspectives: What consequences do they foresee from these developments, how can they best prepare, and what kind of support is essential for them?
In addition, Erasmus Verbindt will address how these themes can be integrated into the educational curriculum of Erasmus University Rotterdam, and how we can leverage them to our advantage

Karen van Oudenhoven-van der Zee
Karen van Oudenhoven-van der Zee provides an overview of the 'State of the Country' during her lecture, examining the well-being of both individuals and society in the Netherlands.
She delves into various aspects including the quality of life, levels of participation, structural inequalities among different groups, and the prevalent lack of trust in politics. Additionally, she discusses strategies required to reverse these trends.

Dr. Walter J.J. Manshanden
Walter J.J. Manshanden has over 25 years of research experience in the field of regional economics and works at the Netherlands Economic Observatory in Rotterdam, which he co-founded. He previously worked as a researcher at the Foundation for Economic Research at the University of Amsterdam and TNO.
Prof. Frank van Oort
Prof. Frank van Oort is a professor of Urban and Regional Economics at the Erasmus School of Economics. He is a research fellow at the Tinbergen Institute and editor of the journal Regional Studies.
He previously worked at Utrecht University, the Spatial Planning Agency, the Environmental Assessment Agency (PBL), and the Ministry of Housing, Spatial Planning, and Environment (VROM).
Jeroen van Haaren
Jeroen van Haaren is an urban and regional economist. He researches labor markets, real estate markets, amenities, and the relationships between them. Employment and productivity growth, affordability in the housing market, as well as urban attractiveness, are subjects of Jeroen's research.
His research is characterized by a fact-based approach and is often data-driven, with a focus on practical applications. Jeroen advises policymakers and decision-makers in determining strategies to pursue balanced development in cities and regions. In recent years, Jeroen has regularly contributed research to the Economic Outlook Rotterdam.
Prof. Dr. Menno Fenger
Menno Fenger is a professor of Institutional Policy Analysis at the Erasmus School of Social and Behavioral Sciences. His research primarily focuses on the design, implementation, and effects of policies targeting individuals with substantial barriers from the labor market.
Menno is also the chair of the Kenniswerkplaats Stedelijke Arbeidsmarkt, a collaboration between Erasmus University, Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences, and the municipality of Rotterdam on the topic of labor market.
Merten Nefs
Merten Nefs is a senior researcher at the Erasmus Centre for Urban, Port and Transport Economics (UPT) in Rotterdam. He has been teaching at various universities and colleges since 2016. Merten is currently pursuing a PhD in sustainable spatial planning of logistics (Landscapes of Trade, TUDelft, 2024).
He has experience in spatial planning and analysis, particularly focusing on issues where the economy creates dilemmas in spatial use, such as the circular economy and broad prosperity.
Florian Wijker
Florian Wijker is the programme leader for education at the strategic initiative Erasmus Verbindt (EV). Erasmus Verbindt aims to ensure that challenges, knowledge, and information from the region continue to reach our university. How do we ensure that academic insights reach those places in the city where they can generate a positive impact?
And how do we do this in a way that educates the students who carry it out to become socially engaged and skilled individuals? That is the mission of Erasmus Verbindt. As the program leader for education, Florian ensures that each year, over 50 educational formats from EUR, EMC, and TU Delft are provided with concrete socio-economic cases.
Joris Beek
Joris Beek is a postdoctoral researcher at Erasmus University Rotterdam, focusing on the meaning of work for individuals and how work is socially and geographically structured within our society.
He earned his PhD in education from Utrecht University, where his research centered on interest development and how it relates to the situatedness of young people within their (multiple) social practices.
