Introduction

Would you like to know more about how to construct (group) assignments and how to grade them? Or are you interested in exploring the opportunities and challenges of alternative modes of assessment, such as process assessment, portfolio assessment, or competency assessment? Then this is the right MicroLab for you!

In this MicroLab you will learn how to construct assignments and alternative modes of assessment for optimal utility (reliability, validity, educational effect, acceptance & cost-efficiency). We will pay special attention to the challenges of group assignments. For assessment methods like oral exams, presentations and essays, it can also be challenging to construct a reliable and transparent grading rubric. Therefore, we will also focus on the possibilities of rubrics to enhance the quality of the assessment. We will look into the construction of a rubric, but also how to organize the grading & feedback process of different types of assessment for optimal reliability and educational effect. This MicroLab has a blended format and consists of online preparation and a workshop.

Target group and required prior knowledge

This MicroLab is intended for teachers who make use of (group) assignments or alternative methods of assessment for their course, or who are preparing this. We will ask you to bring your own (draft) assessment products to the workshop. If this is not possible, please contact us about the possibilities. No specific prior knowledge is required to participate in this MicroLab.

Please note that the some of the content of this MicroLab is included in the UTQ from June 2018 and forward. This MicroLab can still be of added value as we dive deeper into the specifics of (group) assignments, rubrics and alternative modes of assessment. This Microlab can also be followed as part of a BEQ.

Content, form and time investment

Before attending the workshop, we ask you to prepare with the online materials in the Canvas module (2-3 hours). In the workshop (3 hours), we will discuss your preparation assignments and you will evaluate your own assessment products. Next to this, we value the importance of peer learning and therefore you will give and receive feedback upon your assessment products.
